67 – Muhammad ibn al-Husayn narrated to me; Shuʿayb ibn Muḥriz narrated to me; Ṣāliḥ al-Murri narrated to us:
“I once asked ʿAṭāʾ al-Sulaymī, ‘What do you yearn for?’ He wept and then replied, ‘By Allah, O Abū Bishr, I crave only to be reduced to ashes, such that no trace of folly could ever be re-formed from them—neither in this world nor in the Hereafter.’ ⦗50⦘ Ṣāliḥ added, ‘By Allah, his words moved me to tears, and I realized that what he really sought was deliverance from the rigours of the Day of Reckoning.’
