Al-MutamanninIbn Abi al-Dunya

He also related that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, may Allah be pleased with him, wept for the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—and was so deeply stricken with sorrow that people would say, “He seems to be talking to himself.” He recited:

[in the al-Baḥr al-Ṭawīl metre]
Would that the vault of heaven had rent its edge in two,
its shining stars cascading, scattered far and wide; ⦗46⦘
For when I saw the people, every one of them
brought low beneath the cry that spread the news of death,
I heard, before that shout which crushed and stunned my heart,
ʿAbbās proclaim his passing—how that cry alarmed!
Around their Prophet people thronged, imploring him,
while streams of tears rolled down their weeping eyes.
So let the folk of Madinah, every one of them,
and Muslims in all lands alike, lament his loss.
