54 – Bishr ibn Bashshar narrated to us; ʿUmar ibn Yunus al-Yamami narrated to us; my father narrated to me; and Ikrimah ibn Khalid said: He went in to visit Nafiʿ ibn Abi ʿAlqamah al-Kinani—who at that time was governor of Mecca—while he was ill. Seeing how gravely he was suffering, he said to him, “Fear Allah and remember Him often.” Nafiʿ then turned his face toward the wall and remained silent for a while. After some time he turned back to me and said, “O Khalid, I do not reject what you have said, yet I would have preferred to be a slave owned by the sons of so-and-so, from among Kinana—the most wretched household in Kinana—provided I had never held any part of this office at all.”
