18 – Ishaq ibn Ismaʿil narrated to us; Jarir narrated to us; from Ismaʿil ibn Abi Khalid; from al-Shaʿbi, who said:
When ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with him—drank some milk and it flowed out through the wound made by the stab, he declared, “Allah is the Greatest.” Men around him began to lavish praise on him, so he looked at them and said, “Whoever you have beguiled with such flattery is surely deceived. I would dearly love to leave this world as free of burden as I entered it. If today I owned everything upon which the sun rises and sets, I would ransom myself with it from the horror of that first encounter (with my Lord).”
