147 – Bishr ibn Bashshār narrated to me; ʿUmar ibn Yūnus al-Yamāmī narrated to us; my father narrated to me; ʿIkrimah ibn Khālid reported:

He entered upon Nāfiʿ ibn Abī ʿAlqamah al-Kinānī while the latter was governor of Mecca, having come to visit him during an illness, and found him gravely sick. ʿIkrimah said to him, “Fear Allah and remember Him often. Allah has granted you wealth, so make the bequest He has ordered, for it should reach the kin, the needy, and the cause of Allah.”

“When I said that,” he continued, “the governor turned his face toward the wall and remained like that for a while; then ⦗86⦘ he turned back to me and said, ‘O Khālid, I do not reject what you say, yet I would love to have been a slave owned by such-and-such a clan of Kinānah, drawing water for them, and never to have undertaken any part of this office at all.’”
