146 – Nūḥ ibn Ḥabīb narrated to me; al-Muʾammal ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Thābit al-Bunnānī, from Anas ibn Mālik, from the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—who said:
“When the people of Paradise have entered Paradise and the people of the Fire have entered the Fire, a man from among the people of Paradise will be summoned and it will be said to him, ‘How do you find your dwelling and your place of rest?’ ⦗85⦘ He will reply, ‘The best dwelling and the best place of rest.’
He will then be asked, ‘Do you wish for anything?’ He will answer, ‘Yes. I wish I could be returned to the worldly life so that I might be killed in Your path,’ because of what he sees of the virtue of martyrdom.
Next, a man from among the people of the Fire will be summoned and it will be said to him, ‘How did you find your dwelling and your place of rest?’ He will answer, ‘The worst dwelling and the worst place of rest.’
He will be asked, ‘Would you ransom yourself with anything?’ He will say, ‘Yes.’ It will be said, ‘With how much?’ He will reply, ‘With gold filling the whole earth.’
It will be said to him, ‘You have lied. You were asked for something less than that, but you refused.’ Then the first will be returned to Paradise, and this one will be returned to the Fire.”
