138 – Abu Bakr al-Bahili narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Wahhab al-Thaqafi narrated to us, from Humayd ibn Hilal, from Abu Burdah, who said: Ibn ʿUmar asked me, “Do you know what my father said to your father? ⦗82⦘” I replied, “What did he say?” He said: “He asked him, ‘Would you be pleased if your companionship with the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—were kept safe for you and you slipped away from your present post with a clean slate?’ He answered, ‘No, that would not please me. I came to a people blind in matters of religion, so I opened their eyes, taught them the Quran, and conquered land for them.’ My father then said, ‘But by Allah, I would love that my companionship with the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—remained secure for me and that I could escape from this office of mine with nothing for or against me.’” Abu Burdah concluded, “By Allah, your father was better than my father.”
