12 – ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd narrated to us; Shuʿbah informed us; from ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUbayd Allāh; from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿĀmir, who said: ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him) picked up a piece of straw and said, “If only ⦗27⦘ I were like this straw! If only my mother had never given birth to me. Would that I had been nothing at all—would that I were a thing forgotten, lost to memory.”
