88 – Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿīd al-Jawharī narrated to me; Sahl ibn Bakkār narrated to us; Abū ʿAwāna narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr said: A woman came to Ziyād seeking legal redress against her husband. The husband said, “May Allah set you aright! The best half of a man’s life is its latter half, while the worst half of a woman’s life is her latter half.” Ziyād asked, “Woe to you—how so?” He replied, “When a man grows old, his judgment becomes well-founded, his ignorance departs, and his forbearance endures; but when a woman grows old, her tongue grows sharp, her temperament deteriorates, and her womb becomes barren.” Ziyād then said, “Take her by the hand.”
