84 – Abu al-Hasan al-Basri narrated to me. He said: “I heard Abu Salih Mahbub ibn Musa al-Farra’ say: I heard ʿAwn ibn Muslim say that ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab said:

‘A girl of ten is the object of onlookers’ desire;

a girl of twenty is a radiant sun—soft and yielding;

a girl of thirty is the delight of those who embrace her;

at forty she is endowed with noble character and devotion;

at fifty she is the mother of daughters and sons;

at sixty she still looks out for suitors;

and at seventy she is an old woman among those who remain.’
