73 – Abu Jaʿfar, the client of Banū Hāshim, told me: Abu Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh would recite:
“I have awoken to find my life like a tattered cloak—
whichever corner I seize with my hand, it splits.
I stitch it up for a while, and soon it gapes again;
whoever would shield himself from the blows of Time
must content himself with flimsy patches.
For a lifetime is but a single day that has hurried on.”
