70 – Ahmad ibn ʿUbayd al-Tamimi narrated to me: Whenever Abu ʿUbaydah the Grammarian was about to rise, he would recite these lines of Abu al-Tamhān al-Qayni:
The twists and turns of time have bent me low
till I stalk like a hunter edging toward his prey;
My steps grow short; whoever sees me thinks
I am in fetters—yet no chain binds me.
