58 – Abū Zayd al-Numayrī narrated to us; Abū ʿĀṣim narrated to us; he said: my father informed me, saying ⦗69⦘:
The Banū Tamīm once gathered before Iyās ibn Qatādah to consult him about some of their affairs. While he was arranging his turban and the people were standing around him, he caught sight of a single white hair in his beard. Immediately he unwrapped his turban, then came out to them and said, “Do you not know that I used to accompany you in all your matters?” They replied, “Indeed.” He said, “By Allah, I will never again attend any of your gatherings nor be present with you in any assembly—ever.”
Thereafter he would come to the mosque riding a she-donkey of his, attending the Friday prayer and nothing more.
