Al-Samt wa-Adab al-LisanIbn Abi al-Dunya

93 — Ismāʿīl ibn Abī al-Hārith narrated to me: Muhammad ibn Muqātil reported to us: Ibn al-Mubārak reported to us, from Nāfiʿ ibn ʿUmar, from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, who said: A man spoke at length in the presence of the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—so the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—asked, “How many gates stand before your tongue?” He replied, “My teeth and my lips.” He said, “Were they not enough to restrain your speech?”
