83 — Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, from Khālid ibn Yazīd, from Mindal ibn Ali, from Abd Allah ibn Marwān, from Yazīd ibn Ali—may Allah be pleased with him—who said: “When a word leaves a person’s mouth, the angel considers it. If the person intended evil by it, the angel lets it stand. But if he did not intend evil and it was merely an inadvertent slip, his companion says to him, ‘Do not be hasty; perhaps he will seek Allah’s forgiveness for it.’ If he seeks forgiveness, it is not recorded, while the good deeds earned by seeking forgiveness are recorded for him.”
