80 — ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUmar al-Jushamī narrated to us: Bishr ibn al-Mufaddal narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-ʿAyzār, from a companion of his, from Abū Tamīma al-Sulamī, who said: I heard al-Ahnaf ibn Qays say: “Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: ‘One seated on the right and one on the left.’ [Qāf: 17] The one on the right records good deeds and is entrusted with oversight of the one on the left. If the servant commits a sin, he says, ‘Hold off.’ If the servant seeks Allah’s forgiveness, he tells him not to record it; but if the servant refuses to do anything but persist in it, he records it.”
