Al-Samt wa-Adab al-LisanIbn Abi al-Dunya

675 — Khalaf ibn Hishām narrated to us: Abū Shihāb narrated to us, from Amr ibn Qays al-Mulā’ī, that a man passed by Luqman (peace be upon him) while people were gathered around him. He asked, “Were you not the slave of such-and-such clan?” He replied, “Yes.” The man asked, “The one who used to tend livestock near such-and-such mountain?” He replied, “Yes.” He then asked, “What brought you to the standing in which I now see you?” Luqman replied, “Truthfulness in speech and remaining silent for long periods about matters that do not concern me.”
