Al-Samt wa-Adab al-LisanIbn Abi al-Dunya

6 — Abū Khaythamah and Ishāq ibn Ismāīl narrated to us, saying: Jarīr narrated to us, from al-Amash, from al-Hakam ibn Utaybah and Habīb ibn Abī Thābit, from Maymūn ibn Abī Shabīb, from Muādh ibn Jabal—may Allah be pleased with him—who said: I asked, “O Messenger of Allah, will we be held accountable for what we say?” He replied, “May your mother be bereft of you, O son of Jabal! What else casts people face-first into the Fire but the harvest of their tongues?” Habīb added in his version of this hadith: “Is there anything you say that is not either for you or against you?”
