647 — Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿīd related to me: Abū Ahmad al-Zubayrī related to us: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Rawwād—may Allah have mercy on him—related that a group accompanied ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz—may Allah be pleased with him—and he said: “Hold fast to the fear of Allah alone, who has no partner, and beware of joking, for it leads to indecency and breeds resentment. Sit together over the Quran and speak about it. If this proves burdensome to you, then some wholesome conversation about others is acceptable. Set forth in the name of Allah.”
