Al-Samt wa-Adab al-LisanIbn Abi al-Dunya

631 — Hamza related to me: Abdān informed us: Abd Allah informed us: Sharīk informed us, on the authority of Abu Ishāq al-Shaybānī, from Khunās ibn Suhaym, who said:

“I was returning with Ziyād ibn Hudayr from al-Kunāsa when, in the course of speaking, I said, ‘No, by the trust!’ Ziyād began to weep and continued weeping. I thought I must have committed a grave offense, so I asked him, ‘Did he disapprove of what you said?’ He replied, ‘Yes. Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—used to forbid us in the strongest terms from swearing by the trust.’”
