610 – Muhammad ibn Abd al-Majīd al-Tamīmī related to me: Abū al-Malīh related to us, from Maimūn ibn Mihrān, who said: A man came to Salmān—may Allah be pleased with him—and said, “O Abū Abd Allāh, counsel me.” He replied, “Do not speak.” The man said, “No one who lives among people can refrain from speaking.” He replied, “Then, if you speak, speak the truth—or remain silent.” The man said, “Tell me more.” He replied, “Do not become angry.” The man said, “You have instructed me not to become angry, yet something beyond my control may overcome me.” He replied, “Then, if you become angry, control your tongue and your hand.” The man said, “Tell me more.” He replied, “Do not mingle with people.” The man said, “No one who lives among people can avoid mingling with them.” He replied, “Then, if you mingle with them, speak truthfully and faithfully discharge what is entrusted to you.”
