Al-Samt wa-Adab al-LisanIbn Abi al-Dunya

607 — Ziyād ibn Ayyūb narrated to me: Hafs ibn Ghiyāth narrated to us, from al-A‘mash, from ‘Amr ibn Murra, from Abū al-Bakhtarī, who said: A man praised ‘Alī (may Allah be pleased with him) to his face, although ‘Alī had learned that the man spoke ill of him. ‘Alī (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him, “I fall short of what you have said, yet I am better than what you think of me.”
