601 — Ali ibn al-Ja‘d narrated to us: al-Mubārak ibn Fadālah narrated to us, from al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was seated with his whip, with the people gathered around him, when al-Jārūd approached. A man said, “This is the chief of Rabī‘ah.” Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and those around him heard the man, and al-Jārūd also heard the remark. When al-Jārūd drew near, Umar struck him with the whip. He said, “What have you against me, Commander of the Believers?” Umar replied, “What have I against you? But I certainly heard it.” He asked, “You heard it?” Umar replied, “I feared that something of it might find its way into your heart, so I wanted to humble you a little.”
