Alī ibn al-Jaʿd narrated to us: Shuʿba informed us, from Khālid al-Hadhdhāʾ, from ʿAbd al-Rahmān ibn Abī Bakra, from his father—may Allah be pleased with him—that a man praised another man in the presence of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Woe to you! You have cut your companion’s neck.” He then said, “If one of you must inevitably praise his brother, let him say: ‘I consider so-and-so to be such,’ without declaring anyone pure before Allah. Allah is his Reckoner—if he truly considers him to be so.”
