536 — Al-Muthannā ibn Muʿādh narrated to us: Salm ibn Qutayba narrated to us, from al-Masʿūdī, from ʿAwn ibn ʿAbd Allah, who said: “My father gave me a fine outfit, and I went out wearing it. My companions asked me, ‘Did the governor give you this?’ I wanted them to think that the governor had given it to me, so I said, ‘May Allah reward the governor with goodness! May Allah clothe the governor in the garments of Paradise.’ I mentioned this to my father, and he said, ‘My son, do not lie or resort to anything resembling a lie.’”
