532 — Ahmad narrated to us. Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us. Ibn ʿAwn informed us, from Muhammad, that it was mentioned in his presence that lying was permissible in war. He rejected this and said, “I know lying to be nothing but forbidden.” Ibn ʿAwn said: I then went on a military campaign, and Muʿāwiya ibn Hishām addressed us, saying, “O Allah, grant us victory over Amorium,” though he intended somewhere else. When I returned, I mentioned this to Muhammad, and he said, “As for this, there is no harm in it.”
