517 — Ahmad ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us: ʿAbbās ibn al-Walīd narrated to us: Yazīd ibn Zurayʿ narrated to us, from Saʿīd, from Qatādah—may Allah be pleased with him—concerning the words of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “And among them are those who made a covenant with Allah: ‘If He gives us of His bounty, we will surely give in charity and surely be among the righteous.’” [al-Tawbah: 75] He said: “It was related to us that a man from the Ansar came upon a gathering of the Ansar and said that if Allah granted him wealth, he would surely give everyone entitled to a right his due. Allah then granted him wealth, but he did with it what you hear: ‘But when He gave them of His bounty, they withheld it’ [al-Tawbah: 76]—through His words—‘and because they used to lie.’” [al-Tawbah: 77]
