510 — Hārūn ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to me: Sayyār narrated to us: Jaʿfar narrated to us, saying: Mālik ibn Dīnār narrated to us, from al-Hasan, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “There is no servant who delivers a sermon but that Allah will question him about it on the Day of Resurrection: ‘What did you intend by it?’”
Jaʿfar said: Whenever Mālik related this to me, he would weep and then say, “Do you think I take pleasure in speaking to you, when I know that Allah will question me about it on the Day of Resurrection: ‘What did you intend by it?’ You are witness to my heart. If I knew that it were more pleasing to You, I would never speak before even two people.”
