507 — ʿĪsā ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Tamīmī narrated to me: Yahyā ibn Bukayr al-Misrī informed us: I heard al-Layth ibn Saʿd say, “The eyes of Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib would discharge so much rheum that it spread beyond his eyes”—Yahyā gestured with his hand toward the eye sockets—“and he would be told, ‘If only you would wipe away this rheum.’ He would reply, ‘Then what would become of my word to the physician when he tells me, “Do not touch your eye,” and I answer, “I will not”?’”
