504 — Ahmad ibn Jamīl al-Marwazī narrated to us: ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak reported to us: Sufyān reported to us, from Abū Hayyān, from Abū al-Zinbāʿ, from Abū al-Dihqān, who said: A man accompanied al-Ahnaf ibn Qays—may Allah have mercy on him—and said, “Why not turn aside with us, so that we may provide you with a mount and see it done?” He replied, “Perhaps you are one of those who make empty offers?” The man asked, “Who are those who make empty offers?” He replied, “Those who love to be praised but do nothing.” The man said, “Abū Bahr, I did not make you the offer until…” He replied, “My nephew, whenever the truth presents itself to you, set your course toward it and disregard everything else.”
