468 — ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd narrated to us: Shuʿba informed us: ʿUmar ibn Murra informed me, saying: I heard Murra al-Hamdānī say: ʿAbdullāh—may Allah be pleased with him—used to say: “Beware of lying, for it leads to the Fire. A man will continue to lie until he is recorded with Allah as an inveterate liar, and wickedness takes firm root in his heart, leaving not even a needle’s breadth of space in which righteousness may settle.”
