451 — Ahmad ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us: Ibn Ulayya narrated to us, from al-Layth, from Abū Husayn: A man came to Ibn Masūd (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, “Teach me some comprehensive and beneficial words.” He replied, “Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him. Follow the Quran wherever it leads. Accept the truth from anyone who brings it to you—whether young or old, lowly or eminent—even if he is distant from you and hateful to you. And reject the words of anyone who comes to you lying—whether young or old, lowly or eminent—even if he is beloved and close to you.”
