Al-Samt wa-Adab al-LisanIbn Abi al-Dunya

439 — Al-Hasan ibn al-Sabbāh narrated to us: Ishāq ibn Mansūr al-Salūlī narrated to us, from Abd al-Salām—meaning Ibn Harb—from Saīd al-Jurayrī, from Mutarrif ibn al-Shikhkhīr, who said:

Ibn Abbās—may Allah be pleased with him and his father—said to his tongue, “Woe to you! Say what is good, and you will gain; otherwise, know that you will regret it.” He was asked, “Do you say this?” He replied, “I have been told that, on the Day of Resurrection, a person will be more severe with no part of himself than with his tongue—unless he had said what was good and thereby gained, or remained silent and thereby stayed safe.”
