411 — Ahmad ibn Jamīl narrated to us: Abd Allah ibn al-Mubārak informed us: al-Sarī ibn Yahyā informed us, from Thābit al-Bunānī, may Allah have mercy on him, who said: Shaddād ibn Aws said to his servant, “Bring us the food spread, so that we may play around with some of what is on it.” One of his companions said to him, “In all the time I have accompanied you, I have never heard you utter a word that I thought contained anything of this sort.” He replied, “You are right. Since I pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, I have not uttered a word without reining it in and bridling it—except this one. By Allah, I shall not let it pass just like that.” He then began glorifying Allah, proclaiming His greatness, and praising Allah, Mighty and Majestic.
