391 – Al-Husayn ibn ʿAlī ibn Yazīd and others narrated to me; they said: Jaʿfar ibn ⦗210⦘ ʿAwn narrated to us: I heard Misʿar ibn Kidām, may Allah have mercy on him, say to his son:
“[Kāmil meter]
My counsel I have bestowed on you, O Kidām;
so heed the words of a father who cares for you.
As for jesting and contentious argument, forsake them both—
two traits I would never approve in a friend.
I have tried them both and found neither becoming
in one who lives beside me as a neighbor, nor in a companion.
Folly disgraces a young man among his people,
however noble his lineage among mankind.”
