248 — Al-Hasan ibn Isa narrated to us: Abdullah ibn al-Mubārak informed us: Yahyā ibn Ayyūb narrated to us, from Abdullah ibn Sulaymān, that Ismāʿīl ibn Yahyā al-Maʿāfirī informed him, from Sahl ibn Muʿādh ibn Anas al-Juhanī, from his father, that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “Whoever defends a believer against a hypocrite’s backbiting, Allah will send an angel to shield his flesh from the Fire of Hell on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever casts an aspersion upon a Muslim with the intention of disgracing him, Allah will detain him upon the bridge over Hell until he is absolved of what he said.”
