201 — Ahmad ibn Saʿīd al-Dārimī narrated to us: al-Asmaʿī narrated to us, from his father, who said: Whenever a man was mentioned in the presence of al-Ahnaf ibn Qays, he would say, “Leave him to consume his allotted provision until his appointed time overtakes him.” Al-Asmaʿī also related, on the authority of someone other than his father, that al-Ahnaf said, “Leave him to consume his allotted provision and contend with his adversary.”
