186 — Dāwūd ibn ‘Amr al-Dabbī narrated to us: Ismā‘īl ibn ‘Ayyāsh narrated to us: Tha‘laba ibn Muslim al-Khath‘amī narrated to me, from Ayyūb al-‘Ijlī, from Shufayy ibn Māti‘ al-Asbahī, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“There are four who inflict further suffering upon the inhabitants of the Fire, beyond the suffering they already endure. They rush between scalding water and the blazing Fire, crying out for woe and destruction. The inhabitants of the Fire say to one another, ‘What is the matter with these people? They have added to the suffering we already endure!’
“He said: ‘One man is sealed inside a coffin of burning coals; another drags his intestines behind him; another has pus and blood streaming from his mouth; and another devours his own flesh. The one devouring his flesh is asked, “What is the matter with this wretch? He has added to the suffering we already endure!” He replies, “This wretch used to devour people’s flesh through backbiting and went about spreading malicious gossip.”’”
