Al-Samt wa-Adab al-LisanIbn Abi al-Dunya

18 — Abū ‘Umar al-Tamīmī narrated to us: My father narrated to me, from Abū Bakr al-Nahshalī, from ⦗54⦘ al-A‘mash, from Shaqīq, from Ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him), who was standing on al-Safā, reciting the talbiyah and saying: “O tongue, speak good and you will prosper, or remain silent and you will be safe—before you come to regret.” They asked, “Abū ‘Abd al-Rahmān, is this something you say yourself, or something you heard?” He replied, “No; rather, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: ‘Most of the sins of the son of Adam lie in his tongue.’”
