Al-Samt wa-Adab al-LisanIbn Abi al-Dunya

176 — Muhammad ibn Alī narrated to us. Al-Nadr ibn Shumayl narrated to us. Abū al-Awwām—whose name was Abd al-Azīz ibn Rabī al-Bāhilī—informed us. Abū al-Zubayr—whose name was Muhammad—narrated to us, from Jābir ibn Abd Allāh—may Allah be pleased with them both—who said: We were traveling with the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—when he came upon two graves whose occupants were being punished. He said: “Indeed, they are not being punished for any great evil: one of them used to backbite people, while the other did not protect himself from his urine.” He called for a fresh palm stalk—or two—and broke them into pieces. He then ordered that each piece be planted over one of the graves. The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: “Indeed, some of their punishment will be lightened for as long as the two remain fresh—or until they dry out.”
