172 — Khalaf ibn Hishām narrated to us: Abū Shihāb narrated to us: Hishām al-Dastawā’ī informed me, from Yahyā ibn Abī Kathīr, who said: The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—invited a woman to eat. There was something amiss with her tongue, and she said, “O Messenger of Allah, I am fasting.” He replied, “You have not done so, have you?”
On another day, she guarded her tongue to some extent. The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—invited her to eat, and she said, “O Messenger of Allah, I am fasting.” He replied, “You nearly did, but you did not.”
On the third day, she guarded her tongue. The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—invited her to eat, and she said, “O Messenger of Allah, I am fasting.” He replied, “You have done so.”
