Al-Samt wa-Adab al-LisanIbn Abi al-Dunya

13 — Abd al-Rahmān ibn Zabbān ibn al-Hakam al-Tā’ī narrated to me, saying: Abd al-Samad ⦗51⦘ ibn Abd al-Wārith narrated to us, from Abd al-Azīz ibn Muhammad, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, that Umar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him) came upon Abū Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was pulling at his tongue. He asked, “What are you doing, O successor of the Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “This has led me into perilous situations. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him) said: ‘There is no part of the body that does not complain to Allah about the tongue because of its sharpness.’”
