98 — Hamza related to me: Abdān informed us: Abd Allāh informed us. He said: A man from Greater Syria informed me, from Yazīd ibn Abī Habīb—may Allah have mercy on him—who said: “One of the scholar’s trials is that speaking should be dearer to him than listening, even when he finds someone who can speak in his stead. For in listening there is safety and an increase in knowledge. The listener shares with the speaker in what is said, except one whom Allah protects. You cobble things together and embellish them, adding and omitting.”
