100 – ʿUmar ibn Abī al-Ḥārith narrated to me; Saʿīd ibn Ashʿath narrated to us; al-Muʿtamir ibn Sulaymān narrated to us; I heard my father relate, from Abū ʿUthmān, from Sulaymān, who said:
“A man to whom worldly riches had once been extended had everything taken from his hands. Yet he continued to praise and extol Allah until he owned nothing for bedding but a worn-out mat, and still he praised and extolled Him. Another man, also granted abundance in this world, said to the owner of the mat, ‘Tell me, what exactly are you praising Allah for?’ He replied, ‘I praise Him for blessings that, even if He were to offer all creation in exchange for them, I would never surrender them.’ He asked, ‘And what are those?’ He answered, ‘Have you considered your eyesight? Have you considered your tongue? Have you considered your hands? Have you considered your feet?’”
