97 – Ishaq ibn Dawud narrated to us; Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us; Hariz ibn ‘Uthman said: ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi ‘Awf al-Jurashi narrated to us: I heard ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad say from the pulpit. He had first looked at the congregation and seen that they had dyed their clothes yellow and red, adorned themselves, and dressed up. Turning to them he exclaimed:
“Ah, how splendid! How beautiful! After having nothing, you now dwell in leather tents, in ḥawtakiyyah cloaks, and in striped burud—garments woven in Yemen that are made in one piece without side seams. You awake radiant while other people awake covered in dust; other people rise to weave while you rise to wear; other people rise to give while you rise to take; other people rise to breed livestock while you rise to ride; other people rise to plant while you rise to eat.”
Then he wept, and he caused them to weep as well.
