89 – Harun ibn Sufyan narrated to me; he said: Abdullah ibn Salih ibn Muslim al-ʿIjli narrated to us; he said: Ibn al-Sammak said: Muhammad ibn al-Hasan wrote to me when he assumed the judgeship in al-Raqqah:

“To proceed: Let God-consciousness ever occupy your mind in every circumstance, and fear Allah concerning every blessing He has granted you, for your gratitude for it is scant while you use it in disobedience. Every blessing is both a proof against you and a responsibility upon you. Its proof lies in the sin committed by means of it, and its responsibility lies in the meagerness of the thanks rendered for it. So may Allah pardon you whenever you neglect gratitude, embark upon a sin, or fall short in fulfilling a duty.”
