75 – ʿAli ibn al-Jaʿd narrated to us; Yasin al-Zayyat related; from ʿUbayd Allah ibn Zahr; from ʿAli ibn Yazid; from al-Qasim ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman; from Abu Umamah:
ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab once put on a shirt. When it reached his collarbone he said, “Praise be to Allah who has clothed me with something by which I conceal my nakedness and adorn myself during my life.” He then stretched out his hand, examined every part of the garment that extended beyond his body, and cut it off. After that he began to relate: “I heard the Messenger of Allah say: ‘Whoever puts on a garment’—I think he said, ‘a new one’—‘and, when it reaches his collarbone (or, he said: before it reaches his collarbone), says the like of that supplication, then takes his worn garment and clothes a needy person with it, will remain in the protection of Allah, under Allah’s guarantee, and within Allah’s shelter—alive and dead, alive and dead, alive and dead,’ three times, for as long as even a shred of that garment remains.”
Yasin al-Zayyat said, “I asked ʿUbayd Allah, ‘Which of the two garments did he mean?’ He replied, ‘I do not know.’”
