42 – ʿĪsā ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Tamīmī told me: Walīd ibn Ṣāliḥ informed me; a shaykh from the people of Madinah narrated to me: ʿAlī ibn Ḥusayn was at Minā, and part of the supplication that was overheard from him was: “How many a blessing You have bestowed upon me, for which my gratitude was scant; and how many a trial You have tested me with, while my patience in it was meagre. O You before whose favor my thanks fell short, yet You did not deprive me! O You before whose tribulations my patience failed, yet You did not forsake me! O You who saw me immersed in grave sins, yet did not expose me or tear away my veil! O Possessor of beneficence that never diminishes; O Possessor of bounty that never changes or disappears—send Your blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, forgive us, and have mercy on us.”
