36 – Mahmūd ibn Ghaylān narrated to us; Abū Usāmah reported; Khālid ibn Maḥdūj Abū Rūḥ told me; he said: I heard Anas ibn Mālik say:
“David, the Prophet of Allah, once supposed within himself that no one had ever praised his Creator better than he. While he was sitting in his prayer niche with a pool of water beside him, an angel descended and said, ‘O David, listen to what the frog is chanting.’ So he listened, and the frog was glorifying Allah with words of praise David had never used. The angel then asked, ‘What do you think, O David? Did you understand what it said?’ He answered, ‘Yes.’ The angel asked, ‘What did it say?’ He replied, ‘Glory be to You and to You belongs all praise; praise that reaches the utmost limit of Your knowledge, O Lord.’ David then said, ‘By the One who has made me His prophet, I have never praised Him with that.’”
