176 – Al-Qāsim ibn Hāshim narrated to me; ʿAlī ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us; Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us; Abū Sufyān al-Qurashī transmitted, from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Sulaymān, from ʿAmr ibn Murrah, from Abū al-Bakhtarī al-Ṭāʾī, from ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, who said:
“Nebuchadnezzar brought the Prophet Daniel (upon him be peace), ordered that he be imprisoned, and had two lions starved; he then threw the lions in with him into a pit and sealed it over Daniel and the animals. He kept him there for five days. When he opened it after five days, he found Daniel standing in prayer, while the two lions were crouched in one corner of the pit and had not come near him.
“Nebuchadnezzar asked, ‘Tell me, what words did you utter that delivered you?’ Daniel replied:
‘Praise belongs to Allah who never forgets the one who remembers Him.
Praise belongs to Allah who never disappoints the one who hopes in Him.
Praise belongs to Allah who never consigns the one who relies on Him to any other.
Praise belongs to Allah who is our certainty when every stratagem fails us.
Praise belongs to Allah who is our hope on the day our thoughts and deeds betray us.
Praise belongs to Allah who removes our sadness and lifts our distress.
Praise belongs to Allah who rewards goodness with goodness.
Praise belongs to Allah who grants deliverance in return for patience.’”}
